Comments by the artist on the Jazz Portraits series:
At the age of thirteen, I heard "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane, and it transformed my whole way of seeing and hearing. As I grew older and my explorations of American music continued, I discovered countless other great musicians. They continue to inspire me and give me many hours of enjoyment as I live and paint. I developed this series of paintings to pay tribute to jazz artists, known and unknown, and to honor their artistic output. The series started with Duke Ellington, whom I consider the Beethoven of our time. Through Ellington, I discovered his alter ego, Billy Strayhorn, whom I compare to Mozart. I’ve found each and every one of these musicians to be a creative genius. Their compositions and performances have shaped the spirit of our culture. These paintings are part of an ongoing series of some of my favorite players. Most of the subjects are recognizable for their contributions to modern American music. I portray the musicians against backgrounds that express my feelings about the musicians' improvisational solos and that also attempt to capture the essence of jazz itself. I have so far completed portraits of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Sarah Vaughan, Kenny Durham, Buddy Rich, Chet Baker, Johnny Hodges, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, Billie Holiday, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonious Monk, Ivie Anderson, Philly Joe Jones, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Charlie Christian, Lester Young, Millie Jackson, Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins, Ella Fitzgerald, Clifford Brown, Roy Eldridge, Paul Chambers, Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt, Gene Krupa, Teddy Wilson, Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims, Paul Desmond, Ben Webster, Harry James, Red Garland, Gene Ramey, Buddy Tate, Budd Johnson, Arnett Cobb, and Texas blues players T-Bone Walker and Pee Wee Crayton.

Partial biography of the artist:
Christopher Hynes grew up in Washington, D.C., the youngest of ten children in a creative, political family. In the family culture there was a tradition of individual expression, a strong work ethic, and the idea that there is a duty to contribute to society, to give something back.
From an early age, Christopher was exposed to an exciting variety of world cultures, art, music, literature, and history. He started drawing and painting while still a child. Among his mentors and friends were Joseph White and Virginia Daley, along with several members of the Washington Color School—Leon Berkowitz, Gene Davis, Carol Sockwell, Michael Clark, Sam Gilliam, and Hilary Hynes (his brother). Their way of using color itself as a statement had a strong influence on Christopher’s development.
Music, especially straight-ahead American music, has always been a big part of Christopher's life and his work. At age 13, hearing John Coltrane's A Love Supreme was a revelation for him. The experience transformed his whole way of seeing and hearing. He became a musician himself, learning to play harmonica, and for several years worked equally on both his painting and his music. The influence of the music led him to develop a style in his painting that would continue to inform all his later work in any media. The way jazz musicians improvise is how he paints—breaking traditions, stretching the boundaries of the form, opening to let the energy of the moment come through.
In his young adult years, Hynes concentrated on music, playing in bands for several years. In 1984, he left DC and moved to Austin, Texas. Around 1988 he quit playing music professionally and returned to the visual arts.

Other notes about Christopher Hynes and his art:
Hynes is a "listed artist", see Ask Art - "The American artists' Bluebook", and has exhibited in a large number of art shows across the country, from East coast to mid-west, to south-west, where he lives in Austin, Texas: further details and views of his more recent work can be found at his website . Most of the original paintings from which these giclees were produced, are now sold, but you can inquire further about those still available (at prices of $1000 to $1200). [Special note - the Coltrane original is still available for $1000]

Note on the GICLEE process:
A giclee (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity reproduction done on a special large format printer. These Giclees have 200 year archival inks - - - so they will outlast all of us. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The range of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper. Giclees use inkjet technology, but far more sophisticated than your desktop printer. The process employs 7 colors--light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow , light black, and black--of lightfast, pigmented inks and finer, more numerous, and replaceable printheads resulting in a wider color gamut, and the ability to use various media to print on. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the color on the page to create true shades and hues.
The inks used in this process have good light stability, but should be protected from contact with moisture.
